Quantum Adventures Sprint #1

Fun and games for the whole family indeed! It's great when you take part in a race where the winners are names as big as Michelle Lombardi and Tatum Prins, but on the other end of the scale, and by no means the last, you have fathers racing with their 10yr old sons...
The race started off with a 3km ride to even the field out in order to avoid a bottle neck after the first section of trails. In future I shall take that information more to heart and push it for the first section. By the time we got to the bottle neck, there was a small queue ahead of us, which grew quite rapidly. Not that we were too worried about time, it lost us at least 10 minutes. The biking leg had some really great trails (often used for quad bikes apparently) and was interrupted by a portage through a dam. It was easy enough to walk around, but that's not the point, really.
The running leg sent us flying through the vineyards and stopped short as we jumped into a small river, completely overgrown and muddy. For a good few hundred metres we played Rambo in this little Amazon Jungle, enjoying the escape from the sun. Popping out from under a bridge, the rest of the run went through more vineyards, and headed back to the dam. This time we had to swim, with the help of a tube if you wanted, around a buoy and back again. All wet and soggy, we squelched our way back to the transition zone to repeat the whole process. The second lap went much smoother than the first, and the dam was very welcome as the temperature was rising fast! At the end of the second lap was a mandatory sack race, just to sap the last of your energies, before collapsing under the tent in a heap of mud, sweat and cheers.
It was great to race with Simon after nearly a year of him badgering me to race together. Due to various reasons we were pretty evenly matched, and I didn't have to wait for him too much ;) Quantum Adventures put together a great event, with some excellent sponsorship for prizes and lucky draw - it's half the reason for taking part when these guys are at the helm! There are two more events in the Sprint Race Series for 2007, so enter now for a good day out. Check out Quantum Adventures for more info and entries.
