Community Chest Twilight Team Run

The race is a Community Chest event that takes place within the CBD. Starting at the Artscape Theatre at 7pm, the participants run/walk up long street, turn a left at Orange street, then run back down to Artscape, past the Company Gardens. Where: Cape Town CBD When: 05 December 2006 Who: James Why: Dress up, drink in the street of the CBD, and not get arrested An absolutely stellar performance by our group of WSP Super Athletes, in the Community Chest, Twilight Team Run which was held last night (05 December 2006). Our three teams of Athletes were dutifully led by, Holger Bischoff for the WSP Super Athletes, Abe Marcus for the WSP Super Apparelled Athletes and Rhys Giljam for the WSP Super Fast Apparelled Athletes. Being able to field three teams of Athletes really shows the calibre and fitness level of our staff members at the WSP Cape Town office.
Before the race, each team leader strategized their approach to the race with the following rules provided by Holger for his team: “As captain of the ‘Super Athletes’ team for tonight’s Twilight Run, allow me to introduce you to some team rules which I have (unilaterally) decided to introduce: 1. Any team member completing the run in under 30 minutes will be summarily excluded from the after braai and sent home immediately. 2. Any team member completing the run in over 90 minutes will be welcome to stay for the after braai, but will be expected to complete several penalty forfeits, which could take on different forms, such as for example downing a full tot of neat Stroh rum (forfeits to be decided by the braaimaster Kobus). 3. Any team member bringing the company into disrepute through unruly or inappropriate behaviour during the run, will be summoned to a full disciplinary hearing of the WSP board, chaired by Andrew Mather himself, which could result in instant dismissal. Note that such unruly or inappropriate behaviour must be reserved for the after – braai. I strongly suggest that the captains of the other teams follow this example.” Rhys Giljam, Captain of the WSP Super Fast Athletes had his own strategies: “As captain of the ‘Super Fast Apparelled Athletes’ I endorse and suggest we adopt the team rules introduced by Holger. I would however, like to raise the bar and state that any of my team exceeding 25 minutes will be demoted to the status of ‘Super Athlete’ for next years run and will not be allowed to wear their ‘crazy hat’ or any other part of their costume to the braai.” With the WSP CT office situated approximately 2km from the start, Rhys’s Team (guys in the crazy hats pictured above) started with a warm up jog down to the start of the event.
The start was a hive of activity, with various groups of corporates in their team gear, and individual all milling about and absorbing the vibe. Some fancy floats could be found such as Castle who were pushing their drinks trolley (Many thanks for sponsoring ‘The Super Fast Apparelled Athletes’ with much needed refreshments during the race), and probably the most impressive (to an engineer that is), a mechanized tank equipped with a high pressured water hose.
When Cape Town Mayor, Helen Zille, started the event, the ‘WSP Super Fast Apparelled Athletes’ lived up to their name, and were off like a house on fire. After dodging the revellers for 3-4 blocks, the crowd was finally dispersed enough to start stepping up the pace. We managed the 4.5km run at a well paced 20min with the idea being to finish the race as soon as possible to rejoin the slow procession up long street and back to the Office where some much needed refreshments awaited us.
