Table Mountain Challenge - The Route

This is my description of the route. Images of the route and official description, rules, etc can be found on TrailRunning.co.za
The first leg from Kloof Nek, through Deer Park and up to the Blockhouse is approximately 8,6km. It's all gravel road with very little technicalities (ie rocks) and 100% runnable. Like the rest of the route, it's not flat, and the last long climb up to the blockhouse looks very daunting as you come around the corner.
Leg two goes from the Blockhouse along the contour path above Kirstenbosch, through Cecilia Forest to Constantia Nek, covering about 10km. As soon as you go through the turnstile the path becomes narrow and rocky. You rock-hop across rivers, bounce along timber bridges, cruise along timber boardwalks and lap up the beauty of the indigenous forest. There is one section with a lot of steps. Painful steps, where everyone slows down to a walk. At the top you boulder-hop, then run down more steps on the other side. Cecilia forest opens up to more gravel jeep track where you can run more easily again all the way to the transition and feeding zone at the Nek.
Leg Three is the nasty one at 17km, that some people avoid and others live for. From Constantia Nek you have a lovely section of gravel road which undulates a bit before going up a really steep climb. You can hear people groaning as they round the corner and see it looming above. Turning left you climb over a stile and into some gorgeous forest. For the next while it's a narrow path, pretty much following a contour line joining Orange Kloof to the top of Suikerbossie.
Turn right and there's a monster climb ahead, taking most people at least one hour to summit. Slowing to a walk, scrambling up rock faces, taking in the view over Llandudno, gasping for air and digging deep for the energy to carry on. Once up at the top it's an undulating walk/run over the top of the 12 Apostles towards Kasteelspoort. In places one can run, in others you have to slide down rocks or carefully navigate your way around boulders.
Kasteelpoort is a quick way to descend from the mountain, offering high steps, a few bum-slides and generally knee-jarring movements. From the bottom of this it's the Pipe Track all the way home which has a few sections of potentially ankle-twisting rocks, but can for the most of it be run easily.

If you ever plan on doing this race, it is highly recommended that you rekkie the 3rd leg in advance. Not only will it mean you won't get lost on race day, but you'll be better prepared mentally for what is ahead. The Orange Kloof section is part of a restricted nature conservancy area and is closed to the public - we are privileged to be able to run through it on the day. Park at the top of Suikerbossie and hike up Llandudno corner and along to Kasteelpoort. Find someone who has done the race before to go as your guide. Either leave a car at Kloof Nek, or head down to Camps Bay and get a taxi to take you back up to Suikerbossie.
